Pervade quoted in The Epoch Times - December 2nd, 2015

Following the ISIS attacks in Paris and California, several groups within the hacker collective Anonymous declared war on the architects of the ISIS online presence who call themselves Cyber Caliphate. This month, the "independent voice" newspaper Epoch Times, ran a feature article on the efforts of GhostSec, the anti-terrorist hacker group.

The terrorist organization ISIS established its first official website on the Darknet in mid-November, and by hosting the site on the Darknet, the ISIS users would be more difficult to track, and it would give them an online base that should have been virtually immune to cyberattacks.

However, just a week after the bulletin board website was launched, GhostSec took it offline using an incredibly powerful new attack. There are only two known hackers capable of carrying out such attacks on Darknet websites. One goes by the name “TorReaper” The other calls himself “Commander Xavior” says The Epoch Times article.

In March this year, Pervade Software's unique new OpView™ solution was the first protective monitoring system in the world to identify this new generation of DoS attacks which have proved to be completely invisible to SIEM or Log monitoring products.

Jonathan Davies, Director of Engineering at Pervade Software exposed the new attack at the UK Home Office Security & Policing Expo in March and having reverse engineered its source code in the Pervade labs, provided updates on-stage at InfoSecurity Europe in June. The cyberattack method developed by TorReaper has many cybersecurity experts interested.

In the article, Jonathan connects the dots between the invisible attacks and the current GhostSec successes, “TorReaper is able to take down Tor sites. This is a very, very new phenomena. Thankfully TorReaper is a right-wing hacker, which means you don’t need to worry about him taking down your corporate or government networks." He added, however "if the attack method fell into the wrong hands, it could cause trouble.".

European Cyber Security Month - October 20th, 2015

The European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA) organised, for the 3rd year, the European Cyber Security Month initiative and during the month of October 240 activities were staged across 32 countries to raise awareness and share knowledge of cyber security.

In Wales, an event was organised by the South Wales Cyber Security Cluster in conjunction with the Research, Engagement & Innovation Services Team at Swansea University.

In the morning, delegates were able to browse table-top stands set up by cyber security specialist companies from the Cluster and research teams from the university and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. This provided a relaxed environment for people to ask questions, explore current issues and learn more about cyber security from experts in the field.

In the afternoon, the following presentations were run:-

Policy Theme - Jonathan Fortune, ICT Strategy for Welsh Government
Research Theme - Dr Madeleine Carr, Aberystwyth University
Education Theme - Dr Markus Roggenbach, Swansea University
Law Enforcement Theme - Detective Constable Craig Gillespie, Southern Wales Regional Cyber Crime Unit
Industry Theme - John Davies, Pervade Software Ltd
Small Business Theme - Kelvin Jones, Accelero Digital Ltd

The talk given by John Davies, Director of Sales & Marketing, provided an overview of the products and services that are provided by the cyber security industry within a framework for addressing cyber risk within an organisation. "There are certain things that organisations simple have to do" said John, "such as risk assessments, pen tests and security monitoring, which combine to provide the situational awareness needed to make decisions about more specific solutions".

The event was a great success and it will be staged again next year as an integral part of European Cyber Security Month in Wales..

Pervade Cycle across Wales for charity - September 27th, 2015

Pervade Software is committed to raising money for charity and the fact that there are a number of ex-servicemen in the team provides a focus for that commitment. Continuing their support of Help for Heroes, the Pervade Team rise to the challenge of cycling across Wales.

Jonathan, Mikey, John and Jason all set off from the Royal Pier in Aberystwyth and headed East towards the border with England.

The ride through the historic seaside town lulled the team into a false sense of adventure which was soon cut short by the gruelling 5 miles of steep climbing straight up the side of Old Goginan.

The pain didn't end there however, after a short drop down around Devil's Bridge, the climbing resumed for a further 4 miles before the team stopped for a well earned water break in the shadow of the mighty Plynlimon Massif, the highest peak in Mid-Wales and the source of the great Severn and Wye Rivers.

"The scenery was breathtaking" commented Jonathan, Director of Engineering "although grinding up the Cambrian Mountains might have had something to do with it as well".

Having reached this high point, the Team were able to relax and enjoy the picturesque rolling countryside of Powys until, after passing through Newtown, they arrived at the foot of the aptly nick-named "Blood Hill". After more than 50 miles of riding this hill lived up to its name and sent heart rates climbing upwards with the bikes. Cresting the summit however left the team with a gentle downhill cruise to the Shropshire border.

A great time was had by all and money was raised for a very worthy cause.

The Hero Ride in support of Help for Heroes - June 21st, 2015

Pervade Software is committed to raising money for charity and the fact that there are a number of ex-servicemen in the team provides a focus for that commitment. Over the years, Pervade team members have swum, cycled and run for a number of charities including the Army Benevolent Fund, the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes.

Help for Heroes was launched on 1 October 2007 to support Serving and Reservist Personnel and Veterans who have suffered injuries or illness as a result of their service to the Nation.

A key part of this support is organising "Challenges" to help motivate injured servicemen in their recovery and they extend this same approach to their fundraising by inviting fundraisers to participate in similar Challenges.

One of the signature H4H cycling challenges is the "Hero Ride" which this year saw 100 ‘wounded’ riders collectively cover 18,000 miles from 14-21 June, accompanied by 1,000 fundraisers.

John Davies, Director of Sales & Marketing accepted the challenge this year and cycled the 107 mile West Ride from Tedworth House in Wiltshire. The ride started at midnight (which is why it has earned the nickname "The Dawn Raid" as cyclist pedal their way through the hours of darkness to arrive in Windsor the following morning).

"Great team, great route and a great cause" said John, "very tiring but a wonderful experience and I'd definitely be up for doing it again next year".

InfoSecurity Europe 2015 - June 2nd - 4th, 2015

Infosecurity Europe is Europe's number one Information Security event. Featuring over 325 exhibitors, the most diverse range of new products and services, an unrivalled education programme and over 13,000 unique visitors from every segment of the industry, it is the most important date in the calendar for Information Security professionals across Europe.

This year, Pervade Software had a Stand in the Cyber Innovation Zone showcasing the unique architecture of OpView.

Speaking slots on day one and day two also provided opportunities to enlighten attendees on the merits of using a single system that can merge the monitoring power of both the SOC and the NOC into a single configurable platform.

As sophisticated APTs and the latest generation of DDoS attacks are proving, it takes more than just a SIEM to identify modern threats and Pervade Software is finding attack vectors that traditional systems are missing.

Helping to man the stand was Jason Davies, the MD of Hashtag Marketing Ltd, a "zero vulnerability" website security firm based in North Wales who use Pervade Software as a configurable security auditing tool to pen test, vulnerability scan and continuously monitor the business critical websites of his customers.

"Pervade Software puts the querying capabilities of half a dozen separate systems at our fingertips" said Jason. "We have forensic capabilities to out-perform global MSSPs and while they spend a fortune on multiple systems, we have everything on a single dashboard for a fraction of the cost".

Pervade Software in Secure Computing Magazine - March 19th, 2015

Hackers route via Tor for stealthy 'slow-death' DoS attacks an article by Doug Drinkwater

"Vigilante hactivists have been taking down pornography, Jihadi and other websites by using a new type of "slow-death" Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack that is virtually undetectable, bypassing some leading security solutions. Jonathan Davies, director of engineering at Pervade Software, revealed to SCMagazineUK.com how his company had been testing layer 7 DoS techniques in a lab environment prior to noting that hackers named ‘Tor Reaper' and ‘Bitcoin Baron' were using a similar method to hit numerous sites, including child and animal pornography sites, one of which had a membership of more than 39,000 users".

This is the opening paragraph of a feature article in this month's Secure Computing Magazine.

Industry specialist feature writer Doug Drinkwater, broke this story within days of the new attack vector being identified and spoke with Pervade Software just as the analysts in the Pervade Lab had replicated the attack.

Although these new attacks are completely invisible to SIEM & Log security monitoring systems, the unique architecture of the OpView system means it can identify these attacks and mitigate them automatically.

Secure Computing Magazine's Showcase UK Event - SC Congress - March 3rd, 2015

Information security professionals flocked to the ILEC Conference Centre to network and sit in on insightful panel discussions featuring prominent industry figures during SC Congress 2015 in London.

Pervade Software were Gold Sponsors for the event and Director of Engineering, Jonathan Davies provided delegates with insights into the threats posed by next generation DoS attacks such as the new variant of "Slow Death" which is invisible to all SIEM systems and incredibly difficult to block.

"New attacks like this, along with some of the more devious APTs, can only be identified by correlating clues from multiple systems and CISOs have to turn to the Availability, Performance and Asset systems which are more commonly the domain of the NOC rather than the SOC" Jonathan explained.

Whilst running demonstrations of the ground-breaking OpView system, Jonathan showed security professionals at the Congress how cross-referencing multiple data types can reveal behaviours and anomalies that are invisible to even the most expensive monitoring systems.

In its second year, SC Congress has generated enough recognition to attract the largest cross section of cyber-security executives in the UK. In just one day, SC Congress London featured a full agenda: keynote addresses, panel sessions, CPE accreditation, countless networking opportunities and meaningful dialogues with representatives of some of the premier brands in information security today.

"We were delighted to be given the opportunity to share our ideas with such a broad spectrum of security specialist" said Jonathan, "We look forward to being invited back next year"..

Pervade supports The National Assembly for Wales - at a Rugby Game - February 6th, 2015

The opening match of the 2015 6 Nations Championship was Wales vs England, played at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff on the 6th February.

On the same day, tucked away at the north end of the Welsh shrine to its national sport, another important game was being played on the hallowed ground of the Cardiff Arms Park. The National Assembly for Wales XV rugby team played the Commons & Lords RUFC from Westminster in another Wales vs England showdown.

The sport of Rugby Union has been a major influence in the lives of the majority of Pervade Software's close-knit team. Although the company was formed and has its headquarters in South Wales, members of staff hail from England and South Africa which are also great rugby nations and the company recognises the values of the game including personal courage, The importance of teamwork, striving for success, self-discipline, respect & sportsmanship.

Pervade staff, along with other cyber security companies were hosted by Paul Costelloe of CIPROS International. It was a great game, played with passion and skill, by politicians and staffers ranging from 23 to 63 and the final score was 33-14 to the Welsh Assembly team. At the end of the game, the group was invited down to pitch-side to meet players from both teams.

A group of us were treated to a photograph with great representatives of the game and government - Lord Addington and the Rt.Hon. Stephen Crabb Secretary of State for Wales.

The experience was topped off with access to the clubhouse to meet the teams and share in the post-match curry and rice. Banter was exchanged, shirts were presented to the organisers and it was announced that over £7,500 had been raised in aid for Bowel Cancer UK.

A great time was had by all and we at Pervade came away from the event determined to provide more support for this ingenious use of the wonderful game of rugby to help worthy causes..

Pervade Software in the Guardian Newspaper - January 30th, 2015

John Davies, Director of Sales & Marketing for Pervade Software provides useful insights for a Guardian Newspaper feature on how to protect a business from the most common hacks.

In an enlightening article by Sean Hargrave, renowned for his interviews with Lord Alan Sugar and Steve Jobs, John Davies shares his experience of helping organisations to protect themselves from cyber attacks.

Hargrave has produced a series of articles over the last 12 months highlighting the threats of cyber crime and revealing some best practices to bolster defences. The articles, which are a regular feature in the Small Business Network section of the Pulitzer Prize winning national newspaper, have explored areas such as:-

  • * Organised cyber crime
  • * How to protect a supply chain
  • * Spotlight on IT Security Standards
  • * How to rebuild a small business after a cyber attack

“A reasonably priced firewall cannot always protect against the more advanced attacks" quotes John in the article "but there’s only so much any company can do without the resources and know-how of a large IT team”.

Pervade Software's OpView solution provides far greater visibility of cyber threats by being able to collect, correlate and report on all data types, doing the job of 5 or 6 security monitoring products in a single configurable system. This unique capability brings comprehensive visibility and situational awareness into the price range of smaller businesses who cannot otherwise justify the huge price tag normally associated with cyber protection.

The article points out the work done by Pervade Software, as a co-founder of the South Wales Cyber Security Cluster, in helping small and medium businesses to deploy the level protection normally only enjoyed by larger enterprises..

Any vocabulary and terminology typed into these boxes, including Roman script, Cyrillic or Asian characters, is stored under a new language file that can be used by any user.

The second extensibility feature is a new Report Builder. This comprehensive wizard provides an HTML Editor enabling users to create very advanced reports with cover pages including logos and pictures, contents pages, indexes and embedded media as well as incorporating charts from the system, compliance components or free text. These fully customized reports can then be run and/or scheduled by the user.

Other brand new features that have been added include:-

Setup Wizard - a simple wizard to perform the tasks required to set up a new system in a fraction of the time of previous versions.

New Query Types - query types are constantly being added based on customer demand. A number of new query types have been added including Agentless File Integrity Monitoring (FIM) and NMAP (Open Port Detection & OS Detection).

System Backup Utility - allows complete backups of the Pervade system configuration including all monitoring settings, compliance answers and system settings.

Core Data Base Upgrade - new indexing features increases the rate at which source data (forensic analysis of log data) can be searched from 20,000 to 26,000 records per second.

This new release, which coincides with the re-branding of the products as OpView and OpAudit, is immediately available to all existing customers (at no cost - Pervade does not charge for updates or new versions) and all new installs will be v.3.0 at the same standard price.

South Wales Cyber Security Cluster - July 16th, 2014

Pervade Software is proud to be founding member of the latest Cyber Security Cluster to be formed in the UK.

The UK Cyber Security Strategy, published by the UK Government, sets out how the UK will support economic prosperity and protect national security by building a more trusted and resilient digital environment.

Supporting four Strategy Objectives that were published in that Strategy:

  • * Make the UK the most secure place to do business in cyberspace
  • * Make the UK more resilient to cyber attack
  • * Help shape an open, vibrant and stable cyberspace
  • * Build the UK's cyber security knowledge, skills and capability

A UK Cyber Security Forum was formed out of a Technology Strategy Board programme, funded by the Department of Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) and supported by CESG. The Forum helps set up informal "Clusters" of small companies who are actively working in cyber security across the UK and represents those companies at a National level.

Clusters are being formed in Regions across the UK by cyber security organisations and individuals who want to directly contribute to the UK Cyber Security Strategy Objectives by pooling their knowledge and expertise, sharing their experiences and combining their capabilities to provide a broader range of advice, products and services to their existing and prospective customers.

A South Wales Cyber Security Cluster has been formed, with the pro-active support of the Welsh Government, by a number of cyber security focussed businesses in the Cardiff area including Pervade Software and Urquhart-Dykes & Lord LLP.

The first meeting of this new Welsh Cluster took place on the 16th July 2014 in Cardiff and was attended by representatives of the Welsh Government's Cyber Teams and the South Wales Constabulary Cyber Crime Unit.

Dr Emma Philpott from the UK Cyber Security Forum formally welcomed the new Cluster and the guest speaker was Professor Andrew Blyth from the University of South Wales' multi-million pound forensic security lab.

The success of this inaugural meeting has led to the establishment of monthly meetings which are free to attend and open to any person or organisation involved in providing cyber security and tackling cyber crime.

Israeli Cyber Security Trade Mission - June 26th, 2014

Pervade Software were one of 10 leading UK cyber security companies chosen to welcome an Israeli trade delegation visiting London for a programme of business meetings and high-level introductions.

This delegation visit to London - the first of its kind in Europe - is already proving to be one of the most successful programmes to date for the Economic and Trade Mission at the Embassy of Israel in London.

Israeli ingenuity in cyber security truly stands out as being one of the most exciting areas of development, both in the Israeli tech scene and also in the global cyber arena? said Idan Ben Yaacov, the Delegation Lead from the Israel Trade & Economic Office. "This bilateral cyber industry engagement session, organised with help from the UK Government, has brought our delegates together with ten UK cyber security companies to explore possible avenues for joint projects, where the fruits of such endeavours can be jointly exported to markets around the world".

As one of the cyber security companies selected for this engagement session, Pervade Software were able to showcase the breakthrough technology that underpins Pervade's truly unique Security Monitoring, Reporting & Compliance Tracking solution and John Davies told the delegation "jumping ahead of all other monitoring technologies by leveraging an innovative new architecture has resulted in the world's first combined SIEM and GRC solution".

John closed his presentation to the delegation by saying "Any organisation looking to bolster their armoury in the cyber security battle and at the same time leverage the best practice and recognition that comes from pursuing compliance, can make huge gains by deploying Pervade Software" and offering to "lift the bonnet" and share components of the Pervade solution, for OEM or technology partnerships, prompted a lot of interest from the Israeli technologists and follow-up meetings have already been scheduled..

Pervade selected as platform for UK Govt Cyber Essentials Scheme - June 5th, 2014

Today the UK Government, through the Department of Business Innovation & Skills (BIS), launched the new Cyber Essentials Scheme, a product of the UK Cyber Security Strategy, which will be hosted on the Pervade Software Compliance Tracker.

It has been created with contributions from IASME, ISF and CESG and it is aimed at small businesses who are not large enough to tackle the cost and complexity associated with more comprehensive standards such as ISO27001. The Government want to promote this to as many small businesses as possible to generally improve cyber defence in the UK but also to demonstrate to the world at large that the UK is a safer place to do business.

This scheme can also offer a lot of value to larger organisations by providing something simple, cheap and formal to offer to their own supply chains. In fact, from 1 October 2014, the Government will require all suppliers bidding for certain contracts which are assessed as higher risk to be Cyber Essentials certified. The suppliers and contracts affected are likely to be from the following sectors: IT managed or outsourced services, commercial services, financial services, legal services, HR services and business services.

John Barry from Opt-Sec, the Managed Compliance Service Provider, said: "This is a great way for large organisations to steer their suppliers towards best practice, provide a recognised benchmark and push their security perimeter outwards"

BAE Systems, Barclays, Hewlett-Packard and Pervade Software are among the first businesses to apply for the award. Small businesses such as Skyscape, Nexor and Tier 3 are also adopting the scheme, along with the University of Derby, the Confederation of British Industry and the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Research by the Federation of Small Businesses conducted last year found that small businesses lose about 800 million pounds every year as a result of online crime and the Rt. Hon. David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science, who launched the new standard, said: "The recent GOZeuS and CryptoLocker attacks, as well as the Ebay hack, show how far cyber criminals will go to steal people's financial details, and we absolutely cannot afford to be complacent."

"We already spend more online than any other major country in the world, and this is in no small part because Britain is already a world leader in cybersecurity. Developing this new scheme will give consumers further confidence that business and government have defences in place to protect against the most common cyber threats."

Currently the only certifying body with the ability to conduct the Self Assessments required for certification to the new standard is the IASME Consortium and their assessment is hosted on the Pervade Software Compliance Tracker..

Pervade provides instant ISO27001 Gap Analysis - May 26th, 2014

Earlier today, Compliance Managed Service Provider Opt-Sec used their Pervade Software Compliance Tracker to generate a full Gap Analysis between ISO27001:2005 and the updated ISO27001:2013 at the push of a single button!

ISO/IEC 27001:2005 is an information security management system (ISMS) standard published in October 2005. Eight years on, and the first revision of ISO27001 was released but, rather than being an update, it has actually proved to be a major overhaul. For example:-

  • * The number of Sections has increased from 11 to 14
  • * Companies can now write their own Controls (not just use Annex A)
  • * The senior management responsibility has been re-written
  • * It is more aligned with other policies (ISO901, ISO14001, ISO22301 and ISO31000)

Pervade Software's ISO27001 Policy, one of a wide range of pre-configured policies for the Pervade Compliance Tracker, breaks down the ISO Controls into easy-to-answer questions which simplifies the task of getting compliant and staying compliant for the compliance manager and other contributors. The 2005 version of the policy in the Pervade system breaks down into 250 questions.

Opt-Sec, who use the Pervade platform to offer managed compliance services, had answered all of the questions in the software in preparation for an ISO27001 audit. The 2013 version of the policy (which has 305 questions) was loaded into the software and, at the touch of a button, all of the questions that were common to both policies were instantly auto-answered in the new policy.

John Barry of Opt-Sec said "We have done a lot of work getting our systems and processes to a compliant state but we were working to the 2005 Controls and we were keen to see how this work translated to the new Controls".

178 of the 250 questions also appear in the 2013 policy and were immediately answered (so only 70% of their previous work was valid).

72 of the questions they had already answered were not required in the 2013 policy (so almost 30% of their previous work was now useless in the context of compliance).

127 new questions are asked in the 2013 policy that are not in the 2005 policy (so the work required to complete the 2013 policy is half as much again as the work they had already done to complete the 2005 policy).

These stats clearly show how much work is needed to complete the ISO27001:2013 policy, even by companies who have already got ISO27001:2005 certification. "The real magic was in seeing the 2013 policy fill up with answers before our very eyes" said John Barry, "we got a comprehensive gap analysis, with tasks allocated to appropriate team members, in a matter of seconds, and there wasn't a consultant with a clipboard anywhere to be seen".

Pervade Software releases Version 2.5.0 - October 1st, 2013

Today, at the start of the second year of general availability, version 2.5.0 of the award-winning monitoring & compliance tracking solution was released to the customer base.

The first aspect of this update that users will notice is the increase in the speed of processing. A series of internal caches have been added to the query engine, the charting process and the compliance answer database. These caches more than double the speed of these functions and make a massive difference when there are many users all beavering away on the systems at once.

There are a series of brand new features that have been added in response to customer demand. These include:-

Edit Mode - at the click of a button, the entire user interface now switches into an editable view where all elements can be changed in real time. Tabs, dashboards, charts, graphs and displays can be added, edited and deleted and all these changes are remembered on a per user basis.

Chart Builder - a brand new chart building wizard has been added so that users can use all data gathered into the system to create charts, graphs and tables in a wide range of styles, which will be immediately available for adding to custom dashboards.

Instant Reports - in addition to the customisable reports, a new button has been added that runs the current screen as a printable report so that data can be pulled from the system in seconds for taking into meetings or working incidents across teams.

Forensic Search - last, but by no means least, an incredibly powerful search function for running the most in-depth forensic analysis of any product on the market - one of the best weapons in the cyber security battle.

This new release, which incorporates even more ground-breaking functions that the last, is immediately available to all existing customers (at no cost - Pervade does not charge for updates or new versions) and all new installs will be v.2.5.0 at the same standard price.
